Agritech Startup Idea: Early Warning Systems Against Pest Attacks

The Problem:

Every year, millions of tons of Agricultural produce is lost to pest attacks.

At a time, when we are struggling to increase agricultural produce in order to sustain our ever-growing human population, crop loss to pest attacks is one serious problem that needs our immediate attention.

An article published in the Nature Magazine, states that crop loss to pest attacks’ could vary from one region to another, with farmers in the tropics losing up to 50% of their crops to pests as compared to Europe and the States where crop loss to pests could range between 25-30% of the total produce.

The article also highlights the fact that the threat of pests to agriculture could increase as our planet keeps warming up.

The Solution/Opportunity:

A potential Startup opportunity in this sector is to use existing advances in technology (including but not limited to thermal or satellite imagery) to develop some kind of an early warning system that would monitor pest attacks across a region and alert authorities and farmers of any impending attacks as well as offer practical solutions to fight such attacks through active sharing of information and resources.

Potential Clients:

Potential Clients for your Agritech Startup aimed at developing early warning systems against pest attacks, could be Government authorities, farmers or the companies or communities that procure from the farmers.
